Antagonism of the acute hemodynamic effects of captopril in decompensated congestive heart failure by aspirin administration BJMBR
Viecili,P.R.; Pamplona,D.; Park,M.; Silva,S.R.; Ramires,J.A.F.; Da Luz,P.L..
The concomitant use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and aspirin may cause pharmacological antagonism. Hence we examined the effect of aspirin on the neurohormonal function and hemodynamic response to captopril in heart failure patients. Between April 1999 and August 2000, 40 patients were randomized into four equal groups: 1) captopril, 2) aspirin, 3) captopril-aspirin: captopril was given alone on the first day, followed by aspirin on the remaining days, and 4) aspirin-captopril: aspirin was given alone on the first day, followed by captopril on the remaining days. Hemodynamic, norepinephrine and prostaglandin measurements were performed pre- and post-medication for 4 days. Captopril (50 mg) was given orally every 8 h and 300 mg aspirin was...

Antiplatelet activity of white and pink Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn flowers BJPS
Durairaj,Brindha; Dorai,Arthi.
Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn (Nelumbonaceae) a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine (common name: lotus), is a perennial, large and rhizomatous aquatic herb most prevalent in South India. Preliminary phytochemical screening of both white and pink Nelumbo nucifera flowers revealed the presence of phytochemical constituents (flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols etc,). Hence, an attempt has been made to screen the effect of Nelumbo nucifera flowers (both types) on platelet aggregation. The antiplatelet activity of hydroethanolic extract of both types of flowers was studied using platelet-rich plasma in different concentrations (100-500µg/ml). Both white and pink Nelumbo nucifera flower extracts showed dose-dependent effective antiplatelet activity with maximum activity at...

Aspirin plus calcium supplementation to prevent superimposed preeclampsia: a randomized trial BJMBR
Souza,E.V.; Torloni,M.R.; Atallah,A.N.; dos Santos,G.M.S.; Kulay Jr,L.; Sass,N..
Preeclampsia is an important cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have tested calcium supplementation and aspirin separately to reduce the incidence of preeclampsia but not the effects of combined supplementation. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of aspirin combined with calcium supplementation to prevent preeclampsia in women with chronic hypertension. A double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial was carried out at the antenatal clinic of a large university hospital in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. A total of 49 women with chronic hypertension and abnormal uterine artery Doppler at 20-27 weeks gestation were randomly assigned to receive placebo (N = 26) or 100 mg aspirin plus 2...

Blastocyst-endometrium interaction: intertwining a cytokine network BJMBR
Castro-Rendón,W.A.; Castro-Álvarez,J.F.; Guzmán-Martinez,C.; Bueno-Sanchez,J.C..
The successful implantation of the blastocyst depends on adequate interactions between the embryo and the uterus. The development of the embryo begins with the fertilized ovum, a single totipotent cell which undergoes mitosis and gives rise to a multicellular structure named blastocyst. At the same time, increasing concentrations of ovarian steroid hormones initiate a complex signaling cascade that stimulates the differentiation of endometrial stromal cells to decidual cells, preparing the uterus to lodge the embryo. Studies in humans and in other mammals have shown that cytokines and growth factors are produced by the pre-implantation embryo and cells of the reproductive tract; however, the interactions between these factors that converge for successful...

Decreased platelet responsiveness to clopidogrel correlates with CYP2C19 and PON1 polymorphisms in atherosclerotic patients BJMBR
Marchini,J.F.M.; Pinto,M.R.; Novaes,G.C.; Badran,A.V.; Pavão,R.B.; Figueiredo,G.L.; Lago,I.M.; Lima-Filho,M.O.; Lemos,D.C.; Tonani,M.; Antloga,C.M.; Oliveira,L.; Lorenzi,J.C.; Marin-Neto,J.A..
Clopidogrel and aspirin are the most commonly used medications worldwide for dual antiplatelet therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention. However, clopidogrel hyporesponsiveness related to gene polymorphisms is a concern. Populations with higher degrees of genetic admixture may have increased prevalence of clopidogrel hyporesponsiveness. To assess this, we genotyped CYP2C19, ABCB1, and PON1 in 187 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention. Race was self-defined by patients. We also performed light transmission aggregometry with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and arachidonic acid during dual antiplatelet therapy. We found a significant difference for presence of the CYP2C19*2 polymorphism between white and non-white patients. Although 7%...

Effect of Aspirin on the Developing Teeth of Neonates International Journal of Morphology
Nazir,Shakila; Naqvi,Sayed Naeem-ul-Hasan; Ahmed,Masood; Arain,Abdul Hakeem; Nazir,Naema.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of aspirin (Acetyl Salicylic Acid) on the developing teeth of the fetus while the mothers were treated through out the pregnancy. Aspirin is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic drug used for symptomatic treatment. However, recent animal studies have indicated a potent teratogenicity of Acetyl Salicylic Acid. Its easy availability without prescription has been associated with high possibility of misuse, especially in the developing world. An experimental control study was carried out where female rabbits being treated with aspirin were taken as mammalian model, and their offspring were used to evaluate the developmental defects in teeth. Quantitative analysis of minerals in three types of the...

Germinating seeds of the mung bean, Vigna radiata (Fabaceae), as a model for the preliminary evaluation of cytotoxic effects of drugs Biocell
Kumar,Vijay L.; Singhal,Abhishek.
Cytotoxic properties of plant extracts and drugs being developed for cancer treatment are usually evaluated by a variety of in vivo and in vitro tests carried out in animal or plant based models. In the present study we have evaluated the possibility of using the germinating mung beans (Vigna radiata), for rapid and inexpensive screening of drugs exhibiting cytotoxic properties. Mung beans were allowed to germinate either in tap water or in different drug solutions, and parameters like percent germination, increase in radicle length, change in seedling weight and mitotic index of apical root meristems were determined at two time intervals coinciding with the time at which the radicle length in control group was 1.0 to 1.5 cm (time 0, T0) and 48 h later...

Micro Hardness of Dental Tissues Influenced by Administration of Aspirin During Pregnancy International Journal of Morphology
Shakila,Nazir; Ali,Ashraf; Zaidi,Shoaib.
The study is associated with the effect of aspirin (Acetyl Salicylic Acid) on the microhardness of mineralized tissues of the offspring's teeth, in response to the ingestion of the drug during pregnancy. Aspirin is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic medicine, for symptomatic treatment. Misuse of this drug during pregnancy may instigate developmental defects in offspring. An experimental control study was designed, in which female rabbits were taken as representative mammalian models and treated with aspirin during pregnancy. Their offspring's teeth were used to assess the microhardness of dental tissues. The rabbits were alienated into two groups, treated and control, consisting of seven rabbits in each set (n= 7). Microhardness was evaluated in three...

Novel role of antiplatelet agents (aspirin plus clopidogrel) in an incoagulable blood of a victim of russell's viper snakebite J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Bawaskar,H. S..
Snake antivenom is a specific antidote to the venom action, neutralizing the circulating venom. However, it fails to neutralize the venom fixed to target organs such as platelets, renal tubules, etc. Russell's viper venom initiates rapid coagulation in a victim by activating blood platelets, factors V, X, and anticoagulant cofactors. Activation of thrombin, resulting in formation of micro-thrombi, fibrinolysis, and a vicious cascade, sets in. Inhibition of activated platelets by aspirin (cyclooxygenase inhibitor) and clopidogrel (ADP receptor inhibitor) helps to break this vicious circle induced by Russell's venom and may initiate the natural physiological clotting mechanism. They can be utilized as an adjuvant treatment.

Treatment with some anti-inflammatory drugs reduces germ tube formation in Candida albicans strains BJM
Rusu,Elena; Radu-Popescu,Manuela; Pelinescu,Diana; Vassu,Tatiana.
Candida albicans is an opportunistic dimorphic fungus that inhabits various host mucosal sites. It can cause both superficial and serious systemic disease. Conversion from the yeast to the hyphal form has been associated with increased virulence and mucosal invasiveness. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sodium diclofenac and aspirin on germs tube formation of different Candida albicans strains. Prostaglandins may play an important role in fungal colonization. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are inhibitors of the cyclooxygenase isoenzymes. These drugs specifically block the biosynthesis of mammalian prostaglandins by inhibiting one or both of cyclooxygenase isoenzymes. In tests for germ tube formation sodium diclofenac reduced the...
